Designing Courses for Student Success
Within conventional educational paradigms, students frequently encounter constraints imposed by inflexible curriculum frameworks and standardized evaluation methodologies, stifling their autonomy and diminishing their “student agency” in the learning process. This dearth of student empowerment not only undermines intrinsic motivation and engagement but also fails to adequately cater to the diverse needs and passions of learners. Consequently, students may disengage from their academic pursuits, struggle to discern the relevance of course content to their lives and develop sentiments of detachment or disillusionment towards their educational pursuits.
To address this issue, there is a pressing need to enable student agency and ownership within educational settings. “Student agency” is a concept that refers to the quality of students’ self-reflective and intentional actions and interaction with their environment. By offering students choice and autonomy in assignments and assessments, encouraging them to set their own learning milestones, providing opportunities for creative expression and project-based learning, and involving them in the co-creation of course materials and activities, educators can foster a sense of ownership over learning and cultivate a more personalized and meaningful educational experience. Empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey not only enhances their motivation and engagement but also equips them with essential skills for lifelong learning, critical thinking, and self-directed problem-solving. Thus, by prioritizing student agency and ownership, educational institutions, instructional technology designers, architects and developers can create more inclusive, empowering, and effective learning environments that better meet the diverse needs and aspirations of all learners.
