Happy Birthday WordPress

WordPress is 20! It’s time to celebrate the CMS that powers SO MUCH of the internet, provides a platform for publishing globally, and provides livelihoods for so many people around the world.

We’ve got some birthday wishes and reminiscences to share from our team!

WordPress is an excellent platform for creating and managing websites of all kinds, which makes the platform as inclusive as the community. It is also easy to use, even for people with no technical experience. It is the perfect solution for all community members to find their niche and thrive.

I wish for WordPress to continue to be a powerful, versatile, and user-friendly content management system. I hope that it will continue to be free and open-source so that everyone can use it. I also hope that it will continue to be easy to use, even for people with no technical experience.

Travis Jacobson, VP of Affiliate Marketing

Without WordPress, I wouldn’t have learned as much as I have about diversity and the lack thereof. It has taught me so many lessons that have nothing to do with code. The people are special and I’ve been lucky enough to experience how giving the community is on more than one occasion as they’ve helped me get through some rough times in my life.

Jeff Chandler, Marketing Generalist

I like the freedom that comes with WordPress – you own your own platform, content, experience, etc.

I’ve spent the vast majority of my adult life working with or around WordPress. Through WordPress, I’ve built lifelong relationships, traveled the world, and made my living.

My wish for WordPress is to continue embracing flexibility in customization while evolving the best possible user experience with the product out of the box.

WordPress has enabled me to make a living. More importantly, WordPress has allowed me to teach and to help young people and underprivileged people learn a platform that can truly imporve their lives.

WordPress is flexible and easy to use for anyone at any skill level. I have been able to get super creative with it for things like poetry and storytelling sites, as well as my own business and course websites.

It enabled me to work remotely, which is super important for someone with a physical disability. I’m also able to travel whenever I want and live as a nomad to make the most of the mobility I do have left in life. Without WordPress, that would not have been possible for me.

I hope it continues to improve and keep up with the latest technologies. The community needs to continue to invest in our core product: WordPress.org, and I hope we all keep that in mind as we struggle through economic changes.

Taylor Waldon, Product Marketing Director

WordPress gave me the freedom to start over in a new career after 20+ years in higher education. It also allowed me the independence to be a single woman in tech in her 50’s after years of struggling. I owe where I am in life today to WordPress and tenacity.

Michelle Frechette, Director of Community Engagement

WordPress can be extended in so many ways and is helping users build sites and online businesses in a fraction of the time it used to take.

I’m excited about the ways WordPress will use AI to further speed up the site creation process and help new folks spin up high-quality websites with little or no experience. I’m looking forward to seeing what people do with WordPress in 2023!

Tanner Record, Senior Backend Engineer

WordPress makes building websites accessible to people that have never considered having to do it before while still being a powerful tool for the more experienced designer to leverage.

I hope WordPress and its vibrant community continue to thrive and grow, bringing an accessible tool and job opportunities to people that may have previously thought working with technology or website design was something outside of their grasp. Also, better plug-in compatibility management.

Nicky Bulmer, Technical Hiring Coordinator

I love WordPress because it gives you the power to create any content that comes to your mind.

WordPress has given me the life many developers would like, such as the freedom to code anywhere I want, not to mention the earnings. Also, WordPress has given me the time to take care of my family when is needed since I don’t have to stick to working in an office. I have learned a lot of good coding practices, and the community is willing to help.

My wish for WordPress is to continue ruling the internet with many people that look into it as the first alternative to have their project or business online.

I love WordPress because it is the best open-source CMS solution out there.

WordPress has allowed me to progress in my career.

My wish for WordPress is to have the fields API in WordPress core so that form plugins can use a standard API.
